Editz>> I love you all ![]()
So, instead of sleeping like a normal person. My brain is on fire, thinking of the days events...
I've always wondered, why in my life I keep denying myself things that are so obviously true. Again today, a friend of mine commented that a future teacher I would have doesn't mind anime (rare!!!), an art style is an art style.
For some reason, I once again vehemently denied drawing in this style, and my friend simply said:
"But that's what you're drawing now."
There was no malice... I'm just full of fail and massive hypocrisy. In fact, it is keeping me up right now.
[OKAY ERIC I ADMIT IT, I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO BRING MYSELF TO BELIEVE IT BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE A FAILURE FOR SOME WEIRD REASON.]
I wonder if this strange self denial has come from years of brainwashing, where teachers have countlessly shunned comic style drawing, my father every now and then popping in on me drawing some anime and asking me "Don't you ever draw anything other than that?"
I originally got into this solely because I love it. Something about the simplicity of lines making up an expression has always appealed to me. Even in comparison between animation and graphic novels, I always have leaned towards the traditional hand drawn stuff. (not that animation is bad, just a different venue of art)
In a sad confessional kind of way, I wish to be the kind of person who'd just say "Screw you" when someone questioned my choices. Secretly I pine to be the person who works for tokyopop or some publication company that supports this type of work.
In a way I believe that all artists will never get past having to explain themselves. This just seems to be how it is for many vocations, art being one of the more commonly misunderstood.
Anyhow, for those of you going strong and drawing what you love, many many kudos. For the rest who are still searching for that path, don't give up. There are too many people to put us down, not enough who will grab your shoulders and shake you telling you to just do what you want to do.
Sorry for the long journal~ over and out!

Devious Comments
Don't let that get you down man, just do what you do and let people continue on with their shitty careers, because to me it's all jealousy when people see that we can draw and they can't, so they have to bring the artist down by saying retarded stuff. Just look at them and laugh next time and realize what you got going for ya.

I've already strayed from the path of riteousness!!(totally not the correct spelling)

"I'm not in denial, but even if I were, I wouldn't admit it."
Lets start with its not about style its about technical ability.
Now if you're looking for illustration WORK then yes, there is a huge element of style there. Because its capitalism and an editor wants to see something they thing is right for their publication. But that's a fact of life. As an animator I have to be able to COPY someone elses style to get work, because rarely am I the one designing the characters. But when I illustrate I draw however I design, knowing that if you hire me for that you're hiring me based on that work and my style.
Anime is like any 'stylization' that gets popular, people start to hate it because everyone starts doing it en mass and poorly. Take a look at american comics, you can see a few people whose style become the '
Professors often push students away from stylization early on because stylization is a terrible way to think if you want to learn to draw. You have to learn to draw what IS there before you can decide how you want to simplify and stylize it. If you never learn that, you're simply repeating a short hand with no basis for the decisions. Not everyone will produce photo real figure drawings before they draw cartoons, but that's not really the point of the practice. The more you study reality the more your illustrations, anime or otherwise, will reflect that observation and ring true with people. Of course some professors have unfair biases, but those professors are just twits.
And anime is hardly a single 'style' you can find as many anime artists as you can cartoonists and comic artists and editorials illustrators and childrens book illustrators. But its got certain specific methods of shorthand, that people have come to recognize as anime. Thats something that can't really be gotten away from if you like those elements. But for the most part, artists and art directors can tell the difference between an artist who just "draws like that manga-ka they like" or who draws their own work in their own 'anime' style.
I have no closing statement. I'm tired
It isn't entirely just the style that I can't bring myself to be categorized as. I think rather it's just being PUT in a category that bothers me some. Though I will admit I am not the kind of person who could work well in multiple areas (jack of all trades and the king of nothing? )
I was bred to feel ashamed of wanting to be anime type illustrator, because there's too much bad crap out there... but isn't it the poor path of all artists that don't get any recognition until they're published and famous ? Haha.
AS A SIDE NOTE. I believe your art has evolved beautifully. Your animation work is quite lovely, but I have to admire your illustration stuff so much more. What life you breathe into it even if it's a still image XD... Plus I love orange and your color palette, so extra points!
